Designing Slides & Visuals for Presentations – A Practical Workshop for Scientists, Researchers, & Academics
Designing Slides & Visuals for Presentations – A Practical Workshop for Scientists, Researchers, & Academics

This hands-on workshop will help you learn the theory behind powerful design and give you a chance to develop the skills to create great visuals for your presentation or talk.

Fees: €360 EARLYBIRD | €420 STANDARD

Dates and times: 1 and 3 June, 9:30am-11:30am & 1:30pm-3:30pm

Over the course of 4 sessions, we’ll help you understand what good visual design “looks like”, why it works, and how to apply it to make your slides and presentation visuals clear, memorable, and impactful. Ideal for non-designers, this course will avoid convenient—but unproven—blanket rules for presentations and focuses on helping you develop an understanding and holistic view of design that you can apply to all sorts of visuals, including slides.

This workshop will use Google Slides as a basis for slide design, which you can then apply to whichever slide design tool you use (Microsoft PowerPoint, KeyNote etc.)

During this workshop, you’ll:

  • Learn the four pillars for effective visual design: audience, environment, message and channel
  • Learn the theory behind great design – you’ll apply this to every visual that you create
  • See practical before-and-after examples showing how to properly use white space in slide design, if and when to use bullet points to communicate, how to contrast elements and main ideas effectively, and finally, how to best use colour.
  • Learn to create layouts, use grids, and work with images, icons, and animation in slides.
  • Working with data visualization and diagrams
  • Be introduced to other tools that you can use to bring your research to life – as slides or other visual material – and how to apply your new design knowledge to make them work for you
  • Receive an exclusive and ever-growing list of resources to point you in the direction of free and paid graphics, icons, animations, and more to add visual features to your visual communication
  • Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to put your new skills to use to create slides that WOW and visuals that get your message across in the right way for your audience.

By the end of this workshop, you will feel more confident in creating visuals that reinforce the message of your presentation or talk (instead of detracting from it!).

You’ll be more efficient and professional in your approach, and you’ll have a toolkit and proven process to help you create visuals that attract and direct the audience’s attention for all the right reasons.

It’s helpful if participants have a basic working knowledge of PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides, although we will provide pre-course exercises to help you get up-to-speed before the course.

Course structure:

4 sessions of 2 hours each
(9:30am-11:30am & 2:30pm-4:40pm CET)

This workshop is suitable for scientists, researchers, and subject-matter experts who present research and papers at conferences or give informal presentations to mixed groups, and who want to improve their presentation visuals and slides.

The purpose of this workshop is to help scientists develop the skills and confidence that they need to prepare presentation slides and visuals efficiently so that they can engage the audience’s attention and explain complex messages clearly and consistently
