We’re passionate helping scientists, researchers, and communicators communicate better – with peers, the public and everyone in-between

We are a tight-knit team of communication specialists, learning experience designers, professional facilitators, storytellers, writers, and communicators with a passion for helping scientists and researchers share their work with expert and non-expert audiences.

Why? Because we know that science and cutting edge research can help society co-create better futures. (And because we’re excited about what scientists and researchers are exploring, uncovering and creating across all disciplines.)

We offer a combination of science communication training and communication skill-building for researchers in science, technology, engineering, medicine, social sciences and the humanities. Drawing on our background as facilitators, moderators and hosts, we also offer custom-designed participatory workshops, and on-the-ground event support that combines hosting, facilitation, training, coaching, moderation and more.

Why we’re different

We’re not actors or “career-trainers”.

Our team is made up of individuals who have been professional communicators, facilitators and moderators in a variety of roles, as well as communicators with academic and research backgrounds. We know what it’s like to navigate the academic system, understand the “publish or perish” mindset, and thanks to our decades of experience in the world of communication, we know how important it is to be able to share research to different people with different approaches designed to meet the needs of researchers AND their audiences.

We know how to work with diverse groups of people for whom English may not be a first language, and in every training programme that we offer, we have a dual purpose: first, to enable participants to build specific communication skills for their needs, and second, to offer them a toolbox of techniques that they can use throughout their careers, in different contexts, in any language.

Many of us have lived and worked internationally, which means that we know what it’s like to view the world from many different perspectives.

We understand the challenges that scientists, researchers, and academics face because we’ve been there too. This adds a real-world dimension—and value—that few other training companies can offer.

We’re small and agile, but when we’re presented with complex projects that need a larger team or expertise that we don’t have in-house, we draw on our network of associates in Europe and internationally to bring in the skills and brains we need.

Why do we do what we do?

First, we’re excited about what researchers in science, technology, engineering, medicine and social sciences are discovering, and we want to help them thrive in their careers.

Second, we believe that the world not only needs science and research but deserves to UNDERSTAND the work that researchers are doing and why it matters – even if the only reason that it seems to matter is, “It’s fascinating!”

The thing is: most researchers are already excellent communicators. After all, writing a paper or a dissertation or a thesis and collaborating with other people to gather and analyse data requires the ability to communicate!

What we know, however, is that few researchers have been lucky enough to have a grounding in how to communicate effectively in all aspects of their careers, and that’s where we come in. Our training is designed to to equip researchers with the skills they need to communicate effectively, authentically, and with impact in a variety of situations.

Our story

SciComm Success is the brainchild of Suzanne Whitby. A communication specialist, facilitator, trainer and storyteller, Suzanne ran a successful international communication consultancy with offices in the UK, South Africa, and Austria for 12 years. A move to Boulder, Colorado in the USA in 2010 resulted in her working with scientists and researchers from NOAA, NCAR, Boulder University, as well as from a range of corporate organisations across the country, all of whom wanted to learn how to become better at communicating their research and results with peers and the public.

A few exciting years later, and SciComm Success was born. Now based in the heart of the Alps in Innsbruck, Austria, we work with researchers, higher education organisations, research institutions, EU project teams, not-for-profits and corporates. That means we have a deep understanding of the particular challenges that researchers face when it comes to communication across disciplines and sectors. We are driven to helping them overcome those challenges.

We deliver our services in person and online across Europe, and worldwide using online tools like Zoom. We choose to do this because this helps us keep our travel emissions as low as possible (a small climate action, but one that’s important to us), and in part because we believe that researchers deserve to be able to access research and science communication training wherever they are in the world. Thanks to the cosmic shift in the way that the world works following the COVID-19 pandemic, this has become infinitely easier for our participants.
