Effective Visual Communication for Scientists & Researchers

Make your research clear, compelling, and visually engaging

Good research deserves good communication — and visuals are often the first thing people notice (or misunderstand). This workshop helps researchers and science communicators understand the fundamentals of visual communication, and apply those principles to the posters, slides, figures, and materials they create every day.

Whether participants are designing presentations, creating posters, or publishing infographics, they’ll learn how to reduce visual clutter, improve clarity, and communicate with greater impact.

Our foundations workshop introduces key principles, while optional add-on modules provide hands-on opportunities to apply them to real-world scientific communication formats.

All sessions are lightly tailored using your input and a pre-training survey — with examples adapted to your discipline and participants’ level of experience.

Delivery options & formats

Foundations of Visual Communication (2 hours)

Introduces the basics of effective visual design — including perception, colour, contrast, fonts, layout, accessibility, and focus. Couple this session with add-on modules (see below) to develop specific skills for different communication channels.

→ Recommended as a starting point for any group working with visual materials

Add-on Module: Slide Design (4 hours)

Participants learn a simple, structured process for designing clear, engaging slides. Includes a slide critique session, opportunities for participants to revise their own materials, and feedback from peers and the trainer.

Add-on Module: Poster Design (4 hours)

A hands-on session that explores structure, layout, and messaging for research posters. Includes sketching titles/layouts and peer feedback.

Add-on Module: Designing Graphical Abstracts (2 hours)

An introduction to visual storytelling for compact formats. Covers layout, text-image balance, and visual clarity. During the session, participants create a graphical abstract to share with others to receive feedback and inputs for improvement.

Add-on Module: Designing Better Data Visualisations (2 hours)

Introduces best-practice design principles for common scientific charts, graphs, and infographics — including how to tell better data stories and avoid common mistakes.

→ Important: this is an entry-level training module.

Add-on Module: Critique & Feedback Lab (1.5–2.5 hours)

A live review session where participants submit their own visual materials (slides, posters, handouts, or figures) and receive structured feedback based on the principles introduced in the Foundations and other workshops.

→ Can be general or format-specific

Perfect for:

  • Researchers creating posters, slides, and teaching materials
  • PhD students preparing for conferences or public engagement
  • Science communication professionals and support staff
  • Research teams aiming to improve internal and external visibility
  • Institutions running summer schools, transferable skills programmes, or writing retreats

Delivery locations

We run these workshops online for institutions worldwide, and in person across Europe.

(If we can get there by public transport, we’re happy to travel!)
