“Yes, and…” Improv techniques to communicate better in uncertain situations
Using improvisation to build confident, flexible science communicators
Science doesn’t happen in a vacuum — and neither does science communication. Whether researchers are presenting their work, teaching, giving interviews, or collaborating across disciplines, they often need to communicate in real time, with little preparation, under uncertain or changing conditions.
Our interactive, playful workshops use the principles of improvisational theatre to help participants become more confident, responsive, and authentic communicators. Through a series of low-pressure, high-engagement activities, participants learn how to:
- Listen actively
- Think on their feet
- Say “yes, and…” instead of shutting down ideas
- Speak with clarity and presence — even when under pressure
The process is joyful. It’s surprisingly powerful. And it’s based on the science of communication, trust, and adaptability.
