Clear & focused key messages for scientists and researchers

Engage your audience and get them interested in what you have to say by getting your message right from the start. That’s what this workshop is all about.

We’ll put the audience at the heart of your message and using our simple key message planner, participants will learn how to craft a clear message and motivate an audience with points that are relevant to them. This interactive session is lively and fun and includes useful activities, facilitated group discussions, and breakout sessions to keep folks interested and engaged whilst learning.

This session takes 4 hours and is ideal for groups of up to 25 participants in a virtual environment.

Outline

This workshop can be tailored to your needs. To give you an example of what to expect, here is a sample outline.

The science behind science communication

  • Understanding how science communication works – and why facts alone may not shift thinking and behaviours

Who, what, where, why

  • Getting to know your audience
  • Being clear about your purpose
  • Use our key messaging worksheet to identify the “what”, the “so what”, the “now what”, and the “and then what” – your key messages.

Putting your skills to work

  • Sharing key messages with the group
  • Receiving and giving feedback

How

  • Thinking about how to use key messages in your communication
Outcomes

Participants will leave the training with:

  • A better understanding of how to bring facts to life for diverse audiences.
  • A simple tool that they can use to plan and organise their key messages.
  • A suite of key messages that will educate, motivate, inform or persuade, depending on how they are used.
  • Ideas about how to use their messages in different communication formats and channels.
Suitable for

This training is suitable for:

  • Academics, researchers and scientists who want to build clear messages
  • Scientific teams
  • Individuals who need to speak to the press and offer short messages and soundbites
  • Conference and meeting organisers
Delivery formats

We offer this training as:

  • Multi-day interactive group training sessions  (number of sessions dependent on the content) online via Zoom or similar platforms. Ideal for conferences and large events with poster sessions.
  • Shorter formats with modified (reduced) content depending on your needs, for example, webinars, short talks, and half-day sessions.
  • Part of longer science and research communication programmes for students and early career scientists.

Kind words

Loved this. So much information and still time for some good discussions with fellow students. I look forward to being able to use some of the ideas when I create my first poster.

I have just completed SciComm Success' Poster Design Workshop. It was full of interesting tips and tools, some of which I have already built into my poster planning. Although we had a big group and I expected a lecture/webinar format, Suzanne constantly invited us to provide feedback and our own experiences, and I enjoyed hearing what fellow biologists like and don't. I liked that the group was international and enjoyed the flexible and informal discussions - some via chat, some using whiteboards, some simple audio discussion. It felt as if we could all contribute, wherever we were. I would recommend this workshop for anyone new to creating posters for conferences. It would probably be a good refresher for poster presenters, too. Thank you, SEB, for the opportunity.

Society for Experimental Biology Conference (2021)

This was a good refresher on best practice planning and design for posters. I particularly enjoyed the sessions on tools for choosing colour palettes, which I have since used in other communication materials, and the discussion about online and virtual conferences, which was an eye-opener for me during COVID. Thank you, Suzanne!
