Networking for success for researchers and scientists

Let’s face it: networking is key if you want to raise your profile, share your research, find people and groups to collaborate with, be considered for funding, find a job, and further your career. The thing is that many researchers shudder at the idea of networking. In our Networking for Success for Researchers and Scientists workshop, we’re on a mission to change that.

In this interactive session, we’ll cover everything you need to know to start or improve your professional networking skills. You’ll build an understanding of the value of building a professional network and how networking can benefit your research and your career. By the end of the workshop, you will have taken the first steps to building the confidence and skills to build and nurture networks, and show up at your best in situations where networking is part of the agenda.

Depending on the length and format of the session, you can expect a mix of theory, practical activities, and lots of discussions in small groups and in plenary. In the session, we’ll explore:

  • Why networking is important
  • How to work out WHY you want to build a professional network
  • How to choose networking opportunities based on your research, your purpose and your career goals
  • Networking strategies that you can use to research, approach and connect with potential contacts
  • Ways to follow up with close contacts and nurture them – online and in person
  • Using social media to expand your network and stay connected

By the end of this workshop, participants will know how to build and maintain connections and their networking, in a variety of settings, both in-person and online.

Kind words

Loved this. So much information and still time for some good discussions with fellow students. I look forward to being able to use some of the ideas when I create my first poster.

I have just completed SciComm Success' Poster Design Workshop. It was full of interesting tips and tools, some of which I have already built into my poster planning. Although we had a big group and I expected a lecture/webinar format, Suzanne constantly invited us to provide feedback and our own experiences, and I enjoyed hearing what fellow biologists like and don't. I liked that the group was international and enjoyed the flexible and informal discussions - some via chat, some using whiteboards, some simple audio discussion. It felt as if we could all contribute, wherever we were. I would recommend this workshop for anyone new to creating posters for conferences. It would probably be a good refresher for poster presenters, too. Thank you, SEB, for the opportunity.

This was a good refresher on best practice planning and design for posters. I particularly enjoyed the sessions on tools for choosing colour palettes, which I have since used in other communication materials, and the discussion about online and virtual conferences, which was an eye-opener for me during COVID. Thank you, Suzanne!
